Abano Terme

Abano Terme, considered the most important and ancient thermal centre in Europe, is located at the base of the splendid Euganean hills. This city is known since the 6th century BC and, as the archaeological remains and in the archaeological museums in Abano and Montegrotto Terme attest, the ancient centre used to be in the territory of the present town of Montegrotto Terme. The great importance held by Abano Terme in the past is also recounted by the citations of many Latin writers, among which there were Plinio The Elder, Tito Livio, Svetonio, Cassodoro and Claudiano.

Abano Terme is divided into a historic centre and a tourist centre. The historic centre stands out for Saint Lorenzo's Cathedral, housing many prestigious pieces of artwork and for the many Patrician villas. In the small town of Monteortone you can find the Sanctuary of Beata Vergine della Salute (the Blessed Virgin of Health). In the tourist area you can find the Montirone gallery, where you can view the Bassi collection with artwork by Venetian artists from the 1700’s.

Abano terme is considered the garden city because there are many parks, avenues, flower beds and squares inviting locals and tourists alike to stroll among historic buildings, exclusive shops, coffee bars and gelaterias. To symbolize the most prized possession of Abano Terme, its thermal water, numerous fountains adorn the town squares and the pedestrian area.
