In the footsteps of history

Culture & Territory

Abano Terme is the ideal starting point to visit famous art cities. Of note are fascinating Verona, Vicenza, the city of Palladio, Padua and the romantic Venice. Other highlights are the marvelous Villas del Brenta, such as Villa Pisani di Strà, erected in the XVIII century on commission of the rich and prestigious Venetian family of the Pisanis that possessed multiple properties in the territory. Villa Widmann of Mira was built by the Sherimann family, nobles of Persian origin dedicated to trade at the end of the eighteenth century. The stunning Villa Gradenigo of Oriago di Mira is one of the oldest on the Riviera. Still others are Villa Barchessa Valmarana and the Villa Foscari La Malcontenta, built by Palladio in 1559 for the brothers Niccolò and Alvise Foscari and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another splendid site is Villa Giovanelli of Noventa Padovana, built at the end of the seventeenth century by the Giovanelli family.

Given their artistic and cultural significance, Arquà Petrarca also deserves a visit, where time seems to have stopped to guard all the magic of the Middle Ages: this small town is home to Petrarca's house with personal items and memorabilia that recount the life of the poet from Arezzo. Then there is Este, whose urban centre is rich in artistic and architectural artifacts. Montagnana is known as the city of towers, and Monselice welcomed the styles and cultures of civilizations of different eras due to its strategic position.

Also, not to be missed is the Barbarigo-Pizzoni Ardemani garden in Valsanzibio, one of the most important and elegant examples of Italian gardens, the Castello del Catajo, which rises majestically from the road that leads from Padua to Battaglia Terme, and the Abbazia di Praglia, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Euganean Hills.

Euganean food and wine

The gastronomic tradition of the Euganean Hills is known for its authenticity and genuine goodness. The origins of local cuisine are closely linked to the farming culture. It manifests itself in excellent sausages, delicious soups, homemade pasta and the tasty grilled meats. With the arrival of spring, the Euganean Hills offer a great variety of wild herbs, which are used in regional cuisine.

Locally grown and produced products which are hallmarks of the territory include honey, prepared by the beekeepers of the Euganean Hills with techniques of the past. Oil production dates back from four century-old cultivations in the area, in Rasara, Marzemina, Rondella and Matosso. Cured Montagnana DOP prosciutto is outstanding, and its protection is guaranteed by the Consortium of Prosciutto Veneto Berico-Euganeo, with headquarters in Montagnana.

In addition, the Euganean Hills offer a varied wine production. In particular, the Wine Road of the Euganean Hills links over 40 wineries with the possibility of guided tours of the vineyards and magnificent tastings. The Colli Euganei Doc Wine Consortium carries out promotion and quality control so that consumers are guaranteed wines that are able to offer all the physical and organoleptic characteristics that only this territory can offer.
