A fascinating territory

What to see during a weekend in Abano Terme

Abano Terme, considered the most important and ancient thermal spa centre of Europe, is located at the foot of the splendid Euganean Hills. This city has been known since the sixth century BC. As evidenced by the excavations and the multiple finds preserved in the archaeological museums of Padua and Este, the centre was located in the territory of the current municipality of Montegrotto Terme. The great importance of Abano Terme in antiquity is documented by the quotations of numerous Latin writers, including Pliny the Elder, Martial, Titus Livius, Suetonius, Cassodoro and Claudianus.

Abano Terme is divided into two parts, a historic and a tourist centre. The first is known for the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which preserves several works of valuable art and for the numerous patrician villas. In the Monteortone area, the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Health stands at the foot of the hill of the same name. In the tourist part, there is the Pinacoteca di Montirone, where you can admire the Bassi Collection with works of Venetian artists of the eighteenth century.

Abano Terme is the ideal place for an unforgettable vacation and is also called the "garden city" due to the many parks, wide boulevards, flower beds and squares, inviting locals and tourists to enjoy a relaxing walk amid historic buildings, exclusive shops, bars and ice cream parlours. To symbolize the true highlight of Abano, namely the thermal water, are the numerous fountains that enhance the squares and the pedestrian area itself.
